Investigations are a formal part of the Company’s process—but so is your right to representation. This FAQ explains how investigations work, what protections the CBA provides, and how a URep can advocate for you. Knowing what to expect ensures you’re prepared and supported from start to finish.
Purpose & Process of the Investigation
What is the purpose of the investigation?
The investigation is used to review concerns or allegations, determine the facts, and decide if any action is necessary under Company policy, the Team Member Handbook (TMH), the Flight Attendant Manual (FAM), FARs, and the CBA.
Who is involved in the investigation?
The Company leads the process. Attendees may include Employee Relations (ER), local Inflight Leadership, and/or Regional Supervisors. Flight Attendants have the right to Union representation or may bring another FA as a witness.
How long does the investigation take?
The Company has up to 21 calendar days from the initial investigatory process to issue a written decision, unless extended by mutual agreement.
Most investigations include:
- A fact-finding meeting
- A resolution meeting, where the Company issues findings and any discipline
Could the investigation result in termination?
Yes. Most investigations result in no action or coaching, but the process can lead to discipline or termination. Each case is evaluated individually under the just cause standard in the CBA.
Union Representation (URep)
Why should I bring a Union Representative (URep)?
A URep ensures compliance with the CBA and fair treatment. They help guide you, support you through the process, and document the entire meeting—information that is vital if a grievance is later filed.
How can I request a URep?
You can request a URep by completing the URep Request Form.
Please note that assignments take time, and you may not be contacted until up to 24 hours before your meeting. All UReps are active Flight Attendants, so your patience is appreciated.
How can I best prepare myself for a meeting?
Investigatory meetings can be stressful, especially when details are limited. The most important thing is to be honest and straightforward. Providing inaccurate information or being untruthful can lead to serious consequences, including termination.
Your URep will help you stay grounded, understand the process, and ensure your rights are protected.
Flight Attendant Rights
What rights do Flight Attendants have?
You have the right to:
- Union representation
- Understand the rule, policy, or regulation under review
- Present your account and supporting information
- Consult privately with a URep
- Pay protection if pulled from a Trip or Reserve
- Compensation if required on a Day Off or to travel out of Base
What does it mean to provide a statement, and where should it go?
A statement is your written account of events.
If requested, it should be:
- Sent first to your URep (URep@twu577.org)
- Then submitted through the designated Company channel
Pay, Scheduling, & Meeting Logistics
Will there be any impact to pay or schedule?
Yes.
If pulled from a Trip or Reserve, you are pay protected.
If required to attend a meeting on a Day Off or out of Base, you may receive compensation, per diem, and travel reimbursement.
How is the outcome communicated?
The Company may provide the outcome in a resolution meeting or solely as a written decision.
The written decision must include:
- Whether discipline is issued
- The reason
- The effective date
If no action is taken, the Company records it as a record of discussion.
CBA Reference & Follow-Up
Where can I read about this in the CBA?
These processes are outlined in Section 25 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, covering Discipline, Discharge, and Grievance Procedures.
What if a Flight Attendant disagrees with the outcome?
The CBA grievance process provides a formal path to challenge or appeal disciplinary actions.
